Did someone tell you they identify as a ‘demigirl?’ What is the meaning and origin of this sexual identity?

Meaning

The expression ‘demigirl’ refers to a sexual identity. A demigirl is also known as a demiwoman, demilady, or demifemale, and it’s a gender identity describing an individual identifying partially as female.

The person may identify wholly as a female, or they may exist in a gender identity outside of the traditional binary. The gender identities can include terms found under the non-binary umbrella, such as genderqueer, agender or xenogenders.

The ‘demifemme’ identity is a subset of the demigirl sexual identity. It describes an individual who dislikes being attributed a gendered sexual identity like ‘female,’ preferring to keep their gender identity closer to the non-binary.

Example Usage

"Kylie is a demi girl. She identifies as female and has non-binary pronouns. If you want to chat to her, make sure you don't get them wrong, or she'll bite your head off."

"Are you a demigirl? Do you identify as female or male? Or are you non-binary? I don't want to misgender or offend you in any way."

Are you a demigirl or a demifemme? I’m not sure how to tell those sexual identities apart. I’m sorry if I appear ignorant. I’m just trying to get a grip on everything.”

Origin

The sexual identity 'demigirl' originates from the LGBTQ+ movement. It's one of the new-generation sexual identities created after 2010, with the first use of it being by the user' bristrek87.' The user asked questions on the 'Asexuality Visibility and Education Network' regarding the meaning of the term 'demigirl,' requesting information.

The user, 'I Am Human,' stated people working on the wikis for demigender individuals had already coined the term. However, there is no exact date when the 'demigirl' identity was first published online. The original definition of 'demigirl' is slightly different from the modern version.

"...either someone AFAB who feels the barest association with womanhood or a non-binary AMAB person who is transfeminine, and feels a vague association with femininity".

On December 12th, 2010, the 'AVEN Gender Definitions Masterlist' officially added the terms "Demigirl" and "Demiguy" to its identity register.
