Shiesty – Meaning, Origin and Usage

There are a million ways to describe a person and their actions, but none are quite as powerful as the word shiesty. If you are looking for a new way to tell your friends not to trust someone, this is the perfect word. Using the word shiesty lets people around you know to stay as far away from that person as you can. Don’t go near them; they are shiesty! This post unpacks the meaning and origin of this expression.

Meaning

The word shiesty is an adjective that provides a new way of describing someone who should not be trusted. The term is synonymous with deceitful, shifty, untrustworthy, or inconsiderate. It is not a compliment to be called shiesty and is usually used to warn others to stay away and not trust someone who is shiesty. It can also be used as an adverb and describe the actions of someone with the same negative connotation.

Something someone does may be described as shiesty if it is done to only benefit the person who has done the action, or if it is done in a greedy way. Someone’s actions may also be described as shiesty if they are deceitful and intentionally done to mess up someone else.

Example Usage

“He is acting really shiesty, I don’t trust him at all”

“You need to keep your eye out for people who are acting shiesty”

“If you keep acting shiesty, I am going to have to stop hanging out with you”

Origin

The origin of this word is a little tricky and pops up a few times throughout history; initially, it was used way back in 1981 in a film titled S.O.B., where it described a lawyer who was disreputable and greedy as a "shyster." Then in 2017, the word popped back up in a book by T.N. Baker called the Sheisty Sage: Triple Crown, describing its main characters as "sheisty." Then it resurfaced and gained popularity in 2020 from Lontrell Donnell Williams Jr., a rapper better known by his stage name Pooh Shiesty. Pooh Shiesty is from Memphis, Tennessee, and first coined the word in 2020 when he used it in his album title Shiesty Season, in reference to his name. He uses shiesty to describe his lifestyle, which he describes as being shady or, at times, greedy.

Ways People May Incorrectly Say Shiesty

Using this term can be easy and may be used in place of other terms when talking to friends. It may also be tricky sometimes to use this word appropriately. For example, if someone does something accidentally, it doesn't mean that they are being shiesty. It was a mistake if a friend told you the wrong time to meet up and went on without you thinking you just didn't show up. This one action done not on purpose wouldn't be defined as a shiesty action. Likewise, when people make mistakes or do things absent-mindedly, that is not defined as being shiesty or doing something shiesty.
